A settlement agreement is a contract in which an employee gives up most of their rights to make legal claims against their employer. 

The employer normally agrees to pay a sum of money to the employee in exchange for giving up these rights. 

The employee must receive advice from a qualified, independent adviser for such an agreement to be legally binding .
